Your Questions Answered
What is the minimum page count for perfect-bound book printing?
Because perfect binding relies on a flat, glued spine to hold the pages together, the binding process requires a minimum thickness to work effectively. Generally, your book needs a minimum of 40-50 pages (or a spine width of at least 3mm). If your document has fewer pages, the spine will be too thin for the glue to adhere securely; in that case, we recommend saddle-stitching (stapling) as a more durable and attractive alternative.
What is PUR binding vs. EVA binding?
EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) is the traditional hot-melt adhesive historically used in bookbinding. At iPrintCo, we utilise PUR (Polyurethane Reactive) binding, which is the gold standard in the industry. PUR glue forms a chemical bond with the paper fibres, offering superior strength, maximum page pull-resistance, and incredible flexibility. This means your pages won't crack or fall out over time, even when using heavy, glossy, or coated paper stocks.
How do I calculate the spine width for my artwork?
Spine width isn't a one-size-fits-all calculation. It depends entirely on your final page count and the specific thickness (GSM) of your chosen inner paper stock. For example, 100 pages on a heavy uncoated stock will yield a thicker spine than 100 pages on a slim gloss stock. To ensure your cover artwork aligns perfectly, our prepress team will calculate the exact spine width for you once your paper stock and page count are locked in.
Can perfect-bound books lie completely flat?
Due to the firm nature of a glued spine, perfect-bound books are designed to hold their shape and will not lie completely flat on a table on their own. Forcing them flat can stress the spine. If your project strictly requires a hands-free, lay-flat format (such as a technical workshop manual, a cookbook, or a training diary), we recommend opting for wire-binding or coil-binding instead.
